The liberation of Azerbaijani territories from occupation has paved the way for normalisation in the South Caucasus, said David Merkel, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and ex-Director of the US National Security Council.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the XII Global Baku Forum, Merkel extended his congratulations to Azerbaijan for reclaiming the occupied territories, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

He noted that, while it was unfortunate the international community was unable to achieve this through peaceful means, the restoration is now underway.

Merkel highlighted that this event marks a significant moment for both the country and the broader region.

Merkel further emphasised that the situation has created an opportunity for improved relations with Armenia. He expressed optimism that Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and neighbouring Turkey now have a chance to move towards greater regional integration.

Regarding the importance of the XII Global Baku Forum, Merkel noted that the event plays a crucial role in addressing key international issues.

He commended Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for his leadership in organising the meeting of global leaders and stressed that the forum offers a platform for experts and policymakers with diverse perspectives but rich experience to discuss pressing global challenges. The ongoing war in Ukraine remains a central focus, he added.
